This year Shades of the Past was quite and uneventful for me,had a great time visiting with old friends I see probably once a year and making new ones.I share all the time the need for community and fellowship…for some the only time they may hear those words are in Sunday morning church service,but you can have fellowship anywhere.The overall health and spirit of any community is sharing and caring for one another…fellowship!
On Saturday morning I sat under a tent where the Shades of the Past Car Club and staff normally displays the 32 Ford Roadster giveaway car,Built by Bobby Alloway owner of Alloway’s Rod Shop in Louisville,Tennessee.Saturday is the last day for the event so the Roadster is moved back by the wave pool at Dollywood’s Splash Kingdom along with the Top 25 show picks and other various picks for the awards ceremony.
Sitting there typing up notes from the event on my iPad I introduced myself and began a conversation with Gary Rucker from Morristown,Tennessee…..Fellowship!
Whats really Kool during our talk was that we shared a common interest in little Hot Rod Bobber Pickups.Gary told me he bought one from a gentleman in Kentucky…a Ford with “Crab Orchard Farm” lettered patina on the door.Now anybody in Kentucky knows that my cousin Kirby Stafford and the rag tag hoodlums down on Dillehay Street in Danville,Kentucky started the rough bobber pickup craze,heck one of the trucks Kirby built he sold to Billy Gibbons (that’s right Rev.Billy G) of ZZTop.Gary told me he knew Kirby and we began to talk about Kirby’s shop and the Annual Hot Rod Hullabaloo,we talked hot rods,family and why we come to these events then hung around each other the rest of the day…that’s right Fellowship!
Gary I hope to see you again and you have my personal invitation at this years 2015 Hot Rod Hullabaloo on Contract Street in Lexington,Kentucky.
Backing up to Friday and our Shelby’s Hot Rod Roundup Pick from Shades of the Past 2014.I think that Friday is the best day of this event because everyone and every car is here,the Pro’s Pick area is full with some of the best Hot Rods,Kustoms
Resto Mods and Pro Touring cars in the country along with the rest of Dollywood’s Splash Kingdom.It was outside the judging area I found this sweet 32 Ford Sedan and it caught my eye just in time,because the owner John McCue and his wife were packing up and calling it a day.I quickly introduced myself and the history of our Shelby’s Hot Rod Roundup and non-profit Shelby’s Way…I wish finding this 32 Sedan happened a little earlier in the day so we could talk with John and his wife.I can say they were very surprised,grateful and honored to receive our award….(before I had made my pick Brian Brennan from Street Rodder magazine picked the car as a Street Rodder Top 100)Thank you so much for your time and building a sweet little car,I hope we see each other again at next years Shades of the Past run.

Going to all these car shows,Rod runs and cruise-ins around the US is not only to see some great cars built by their owners or pro builders,but to meet new people make friends and find out what their community back home and themselves do how they live and their interest.I have made so many friends that I visit,talk with via phone,email or PM’s and I look forward to sending Christmas cards to…I am Blessed because of them and very Thankful for my life.God Bless guys and See Ya Soon!
